Title: “podcasting in the Elementary Classroom”

URL: http://web.me.com/mchilders

Subject/Level: Mathematics/History/English/etc. (Third Graders)

Brief Description:/Abstract: Podcasting in the elementary classroom: Ideas for creative projects with your students. Would you like to learn how to use iPods and digital cameras to extend some of your favorite units of study in the classroom? In this session you will see many examples of students creating and publishing podcasts in math and science and how simple it can be to have them create podcasts for all other curriculum areas. Participants will be given resources and information on how to get started. I found that this presentation would come in handy in any classroom. It always makes it a lot easier for parents to see their child’s presentation if it were filmed and published online to the class website. Some of the things that I learned while I was at this presentation that were the computer systems that are child friendly and easy to use. For example, Imovie, Garageband, and Photostory. I found it most interesting how you can turn the technology that people are claiming to take away from children learning and use it in the classroom, such as, the IPod. Ms. Childers uses it to help students with there reading by simply downloading the stories and having them listens and read along.

Evaluation: I thought that this session was very helpful. I found this presentation very valuable seeing as hoe technology plays a vital role in today’s education and youth. Also the presenter was very well organized. Overall after I attended Ms.Chiders presentation I began thinking more and more on how I can incorporate what I learned into my future teaching. One of the ideas that I have come up with is Around the World Podcast, where the students research about a certain country and share the information online with fellow classmates.

Title: “Social Networking and digital citizenship in the elementary classroom”

URL: http://www.beckytengs.com

Subject/Level: All subjects/ Classroom website/Blogs (K-5th grade; elementary)

Brief description/Abstract: By the time students reach middle school they have an online life. Everything they can experience in the real world-Learn, explore, chat, make friends, and even make enemies- they can also experience online. However, many students do not understand that online social networks are an important tool, capable of teaching students about responsible digital citizenship and strengthen classroom communities, using the “Forest Grove Grid Project” as a model, learn strategies to teach responsible digital citizenship and how to create and manage your own classroom social network. Through Becky Tengs presentation I learned about different sites to help teach students how to use the Internet properly. Also some safe social networks for children in Kindergarten to third grade, such as neopets and club penguin. And for the fourth and fifth graders Ning. Ms. Tengs made many valuable points about the safety and concerns about allowing students to use the Internet. There are risks and digital citizenship concerns that were brought up that I was never aware of and would not even know about if I never attended this presentation.

Evaluation: Overall I found this presentation very informative and help for future references. Also this helped with my final project a lot. I found the site that Becky suggested for children to watch with their parents about safety was very helpful; www.netsmartz.com. Going to theses presentations and attending the OTEN conferences opens my eyes to the resources educators have. And one way that we can make our experiences as teachers better is by sharing what we know with each other. Through technology and each other our resources are unlimited.
